Yaddo Presents: Uwem Akpan

Uwem Akpan is the author of the acclaimed short story collection, Say You’re One of Them, which won the Commonwealth Prize (Africa Region), the Open Book Prize, and the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award and was named an Oprah Book Club selection as well as one of Entertainment Weekly’s “Best of the Decade.” He has been a fellow at the Loyola University Chicago’s Catholic Center, the New York Public Library’s Cullman Center, the University of Michigan’s Humanities Institute, the University of Nevada’s Black Mountain Institute, and Yaddo. His fiction and essays have appeared in The New Yorker, The Guardian Nigeria, and O, The Oprah Magazine, among other publications. Akpan teaches in the graduate writing program of the University of Florida, and he has been hard at work on his debut novel.
