Yaddo Presents: Words Have Power
In partnership with MLK Saratoga’s Dr. King Celebration Weekend and Northshire Bookstore, we are delighted to present two Yaddo luminaries in conversation as part of Dr. King Celebration Weekend: Bestselling author Dr. Jewell Parker Rhodes and multimedia visual artist, playwright and author Shay Youngblood.
Dr. Jewell Parker Rhodes is an award-winning and New York Times bestselling author of books for both youth (Black Brothers, Black Brothers; Ghost Boys; Towers Falling) and adults (Voodoo Dreams, Magic City, Douglass’ Women). She regularly visits schools, and serves as a speaker for colleges and conferences. The driving force behind all of her work is to inspire social justice, equality, and environmental stewardship. Dr. Rhodes has won the American Book Award, the Black Caucus of the American Library Award for Literary Excellence, and the Jane Addams Peace Association Book Award. She is the Founding Artistic Director and Piper Endowed Chair at the Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing at Arizona State University.
Shay Youngblood is a writer, visual artist and educator. Author of novels (Soul Kiss and Black Girl in Paris), a collection of short stories and numerous essays, her published plays have been widely produced. Her short stories have been performed at Symphony Space and recorded for NPR’s Selected Shorts. Youngblood received her MFA in Playwriting from Brown University. Her current projects include children’s books, a graphic novel collaboration and multi-media performance, installation work on architecture, memory and the environment inspired by research in Japan, China and the U.S. She is a member of Yaddo’s Board.
Kevin Renn is a New York-based playwright and actor. Some of his credits include: A Christmas Carol at Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, and West Side Story at Cardinal Stage Company.
