Behind the Scenes: Jonathan Lethem on Adapting Books to Film
In concert with the New York State Writers Institute Albany Film Festival, we are delighted to present “Behind the Scenes: Jonathan Lethem on Adapting Books to Film.”
Jonathan Lethem is the author of 11 novels, including the bestseller Fortress of Solitude and his most recent, The Feral Detective, as well as five story collections, a novella, and an essay collection. He has contributed his writing to many magazines such as The New Yorker and Rolling Stone as well as other volumes and anthologies. Lethem has been an artist in residence at Yaddo several times and served as a member of our Board of Directors. His novel, Motherless Brooklyn, received a National Book Critics Circle Award and was named “Novel of the Year” by Esquire magazine. Actor and director Edward Norton adapted the novel to film, and it was released to critical acclaim in late 2019. Several of Lethem’s novels are in development, and Legendary Television recently acquired the rights to adapt his first novel, Gun, with Occasional Music, into a television miniseries. He’s a “favorite son” of Yaddo, a literary hero among emerging writers and a generous icon to peers. We’re delighted to welcome Jonathan Lethem back to the region!
Prior to the Albany Film Festival, the New York State Writers Institute will offer a film screening of Motherless Brooklyn on Friday, February 21, 7 PM, at the UAlbany downtown campus, Page Hall, 135 Western Ave., Albany. Jonathan Lethem will be in conversation with Yaddo Senior Development Officer Robyn Iovinella-Waterston at the Albany Film Festival on Saturday, March 28, 1:15 – 2:15 PM, UAlbany uptown, 1400 Washington Ave., Campus Center Ballroom.
