Yaddo and Northshire Bookstore are pleased to present Jonathan Santlofer and Russell Banks in conversation to celebrate publication of the provocative new anthology It Occurs to Me That I Am America: New Stories and Art, which features work by some of today’s most acclaimed artists and writers (including 20 Yaddo artists!), with royalties donated to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
It Occurs to Me That I Am America: New Stories and Art, edited by Jonathan Santlofer, enlists an illustrious roster of writers and artists to explore the fundamental ideals of a free, just, and compassionate democracy. With contributions by Russell Banks, Roz Chast, Michael Cunningham, Louise Erdrich, Joyce Carol Oates, Walter Mosley, Alice Walker, Art Spiegelman, Elizabeth Strout, and Richard Russo, among others, the anthology considers “American values; truth in a time of fake news; the making of a revolutionary; the East-West culture class; racial controversy; anti-Semitism; a reflection on the legacy of evil; and postelection feelings of sadness, betrayal and confusion,” per the book’s foreword.
Russell Banks, whose story “Oh, Canada” offers an unsentimental portrait of a filmmaker fleeing the United States for Canada, is the author of 18 works of fiction, including the novels Continental Drift, Rule of the Bone, and Lost Memory of Skin, as well as his most recent essay collection Voyager: Travel Writings.
Writer, artist, and Yaddo board member Jonathan Santlofer has published five novels, including The Death Artist and Anatomy of Fear. He has also edited and contributed to several anthologies, and his artwork has been exhibited widely in the U.S., Europe, and Asia.
Please join us at Northsire Bookstore to celebrate this unprecedented and timely anthology.
